Is there anyone who thinks that their journey is flawless or perfect? No matter how good you are, you can always pinpoint which things aren’t great enough, and most of you, I believe that you always find the defect within almost everything; people, relationships, your appearance, your past, and even your present.
Comparing your present situation to your past is not a good idea, and of course, it’s different from reminiscing about your past or feeling nostalgic. We never could turn back time, no matter how much we wanted to. We need to be in tune with our present or NOW.
Dreaming of having a different ending left us to live with regrets and never be thankful for our achievements.
Tracking the past somehow brings comfort; some might be obsessed with it. Because of the familiarity, we know how it starts and ends throughout our past. In fact, life is full of memories, and we will create new ones. Some memories could hurt us, make us happy and curious, and even hope for different endings.
Do all of us live with regrets? I would say so. When we want to retrace the past and go back, even if we can’t, it starts because we regret something. And the most obvious reasons are related to bad decisions that you had taken, inability to take the opportunities or even unfinished relationships.
As I mentioned in the previous episode, life is not perfect and will always be full of mistakes. Mistakes that will bring us to learn a lesson that’s been a key to who we are today.
We can reminisce about our past, and we all agree with that. But don’t let it pull the brake to who you will be tomorrow. Those hurtful memories will be your armor to start a better tomorrow. According to the Cornell University investigation, people are more likely to regret the opportunities they missed than their mistakes.” I want to highlight that our present matters, and we shouldn’t value either judge our present based on the opportunities we didn’t take. When you believe the opposite, do these!
- Now, you have the EXTRA experience you didn’t have back then.
Your younger version is still you, and don’t blame your past. We know that everything is related and connected. The knowledge from yesterday shaped who we are today. - Be Gentler with Ourselves.
I understand that we might criticize ourselves when we don’t make the right decision. When self-criticizing takes over you, remember that no one is flawless, even though they might be believed that they are perfect.
You only lived once, and make it worth it. - Be a best friend for yourself.
Just like you can give positive, reassuring words to your friends if they encounter the same problems. So, if you know how to encourage your friends, why wouldn’t you give yourself one when you need it?
Sometimes this method works because when we zoom out things, we can see a broader perspective and are more able to look things through without being too obsessed.
