Dear readers, how have you been?
After a couple months, finally I finished the continual episode from “The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth” book which is The Law of Consistency.
I believe many websites already write and explain this law, so here, I will sum up five to six sites as well as the book into one article. Hopefully, it’s not too long, and hope you can enjoy and learn something meaningful.
Let’s begin!

This law mentions that if we want to grow in our lives, we need to be consistent. Having motivation is important but being consistent is more crucial. Being consistent is more than having a full-packed diet program. It can take up to 10 years even if it can take forever. We can take this example, if we want to have a healthier body in our life, doing hard-core exercise and a strict diet only when we are in our 20s is not enough.
I know that we might feel hopeless with the standards and rules we create for ourselves, but as long as we keep being consistent, our hard work won’t turn into a waste (of course it’ll work if you have a good reason and good motives behind it).
Just like what Jim Collins has mentioned, “to change one behaviour, it could take as much as a 16:1 ratio.” Here’s the explanation of that statement, if the behavior we would like to change occurred a thousand times, we will need about sixteen thousand repetitions of the correct action to form a new habit.
You don’t have to have a natural talent or come from a rich family to be successful. Many successful people come from a low or normal family background. Our success depends on us and “being consistent is what will largen the gaps between the very good from the great.”
All of us know that being consistent takes patience and process which explains that it’s not a magic spell to get an instant result. And, if we want to achieve that dream, we need to be intentional to start. There is nothing like a perfect time or waiting for a perfect moment. Because here comes the first fact that the best time to start is when you think you are not ready yet.
Consistent people understand that to enrol in the journey of success, what we are doing and the method we are choosing could be underestimated because of its small impact. It can also be compared to doing a monotone activity. As long as we stick to what we believe will bring us good results, people’s judgment will only be background noise and not something that will drag us behind.
What are the differences between being talented in something vs. acquiring something with hard work?
Talented people fact
- Many of them assume they WILL do well when they put their mind to it.
Because they already have the necessary skills which is also the tactic that works well for them. - Often, they are scared to fail, because it might explain that they are not good enough or specialize in one area.
- Being a talented person is a gift.
Consistent people fact
- Many of them believe that they WILL do well, ONLY IF they put their effort into making it happen. They understand well, that things won’t go as planned at first, and it needs effort and process to keep doing trial and error experiments.
- They aren’t scared to fail in one thing, because they will just keep trying to find the tactic that works for them.
There are some crucial things that we can absorb and learn about the Law of Consistency:
KNOW WHAT WE NEED TO IMPROVE
Without having the awareness to improve, it’s impossible to improve ourselves. Let’s start to build a sense of urgency because bad habits don’t go away by themselves, we need to be the ones who stop it. And if we want to achieve something, be sure to make the right choice.
You can start by trying to find the answer to “What causing you stuck in on particular area?”
That’s why it’s important to be sensible and curious about yourself.
Action
- Start to identify your passion, and find what words can describe you better or what words you want to be known for.
- Try to do psychological tests, even though the answer is not always accurate, it will help you to find the direction and let you become aware a bit about yourselves.
LEARN HOW TO IMPROVE
In this digital era, it’s easy to acquire and learn diverse things online.
When you become intentional about starting your growth journey, list as many as you can, the reason ‘why’ you want to improve.
When you create the list, you are being more than the people who hang their hope only in their motivation. And if you find many reasons behind your ‘why,’ then it’s a good reason to keep doing it.
Action
Find someone or something to guide you and to become your partner.
You don’t need to rush or create such a huge expectation, because it will leave you in despair and out of motivation very soon.
After you identify yourself by doing various psychological tests, you can match your personality with your motivation. Just like a melancholic person won’t match well with how a choleric person works. Each of us has our comfort zone and our timeline, so don’t burden yourself by following people’s expectations of you. People don’t know you better than yourself.
To be able to master something, we need to understand the basics. Someone who likes to play the piano doesn’t mean that they’re a pianist. Hitting a home run doesn’t always happen to anyone, we can get lucky but how big is the possibility? One big hit doesn’t always seem impossible, and the probability will get bigger when we start to challenge ourselves with a little hit.
“Sometimes success is another luck from having the courage to do something simple.”
One more, we don’t need to be envious of other’s achievements, because we don’t know their pain, their stories, what they risk, and what they trade in to finally achieve that. It’s always more than we can see and judge blatantly.
Be Patient
I know that sometimes waiting can drive us crazy and boiling with anger, but many times being patient will lead us to a good ending.
Do you consider yourself as someone who’s patient?
Patience is not the same as procrastination. While patience is an element of success, procrastination is an element of failure. According to an article written by Jim Stovall, both might look the same and what distinguishes them is whether we are waiting on something or something is waiting for us, he also mentioned that patience is productive while procrastination is useless.
Procrastination involves avoiding what we need to be done, while the other is celebrating the task you have done and waiting for the next pre-scheduled to come.
There is no perfect time, and we don’t want to wait for a lifetime. Today is our only choice, if you want something then chase it.
Process
Do you enjoy your process?
I always believe that I am a lifelong learner, and there is one sentence that I think really connects with me, “one of the best things we can do for ourselves as a learner is to value and enjoy the learning process.” In my life journey, it’s more than often where I feel stuck and have zero motivation to keep moving forward, experience things that make me feel lost, or even have low motivation to do things that I usually enjoy (burnout), and this law teaches me to this ➡️to set daily goals.
We might encounter plenty of unpleasant things, but in the end, those repeated unpleasant things will sharpen our intuition and lead us to shape habits that will turn into a new lifestyle.
KNOWING THE WHY
Later and tomorrow will always be our first enemy. If we don’t find the strong ‘whys’ within us, we won’t be able to decide to move forward.
Being successful or achieving what we want will never be that easy. A simple motivation is not enough, because it’s seasonal and it’s so easy to run out of energy and excitement.
BEING AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS & GETTING THE MOST OUT OF IT
We don’t need to get embarrassed by our flaws, instead, we need to know our areas of growth and manage ourselves better by avoiding working in that particular field. Avoiding it isn’t the same as being irresponsible. We can add or work together with others who have strengths in those areas.
People are sociable living creatures, instead of making ourselves perfect and hiding our flaws, we can create and build a team that completes us. We can have strengths in our teammate’s weaknesses and they can have strengths in our weaknesses.
Every big thing always started from those unrecognizable and insignificant small actions. When you haven’t seen the progress, it doesn’t mean that you are stupid or a failure. Those insignificant things will compound and someday they can turn out to be something that can change our lives.
“If you fail to be consistent, you will fail to be successful.”
How do you feel when you read something about consistency? Maybe deep inside your heart, you might be thinking that “it’s not easy,” and I am in the same boat as you if you think that way. Rewriting everything and learning this law is like another practice to shift from goal-conscious to growth-conscious.
These are simple differences between goal consciousness vs growth consciousness.
| GOAL CONSCIOUS | GROWTH CONSCIOUS |
| Focus on the result | Focus on the process |
| Motivates you | Makes you mature |
| Last for a while | Last for a lifetime |
| Challenge you | Change you |
| Stops when the goal is achieved | Keep growing even after achieving the goal |
We have come far, and we are about to finish this law. I want to make sure you do not discourage yourself.
At one time, we might feel hopeless and feel like nothing’s going well for us, that’s why I want to encourage you to put some belief in yourself. Be your own supporter, when you believe that you have the potential, no one can ever dictate how far you will go and how successful you’re going to be.
Here comes the last part, the conclusion:
Lesson from geniuses: Geniuses not only work when they have inspiration, instead they get the motivation and get inspired when they are working on it. Let us get moving, don’t hold back, and stop wasting time finding the inspiration. Craft habits with small acts, and stop making excuses. Small progress is still progress, so let’s commit to it.
Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to be perfect. No matter how perfectionist we are, we are still and will always never be perfect. So, just aim to do everything better and focus on the process.
If you can endure it, someday it will lead you to a good story even a good ending.
And, don’t forget to surround yourself with the right people and the right circle.
