Inside-Out Growth: How Character Shapes Your Success

Welcome back to our exploration of John Maxwell’s 15 Laws of Growth. Today, we delve into the Law of the Ladder, the ninth law, which emphasizes the vital role of building character in shaping our personal and professional success.

Let’s begin with an empowering thought: “To be a success, think like a success.”

Before achieving success, we must embrace the mindset and habits of successful individuals. This involves surrounding ourselves with like-minded people and actively fostering a growth-oriented mindset. The Law of the Ladder offers a roadmap with three actionable steps:

  1. Discuss principles, characteristics, and benefits.
  2. Evaluate your current state and progress.
  3. Commit to consistency and growth.

Why Character Matters

Character is the cornerstone of sustainable growth. It determines how far we can climb the ladder of success. Studies repeatedly highlight honesty as the most admired leadership quality. As Norman Schwarzkopf once said, “99% of leadership failures are failures of character.”

Before critiquing others, it’s vital to examine ourselves. Ask: “Can I rely on myself?” If we lack self-trust, achieving growth is unattainable. Unlike physical traits, character is not fixed—it can be cultivated and reshaped with conscious effort.

Maxwell’s Character Ladder

Maxwell presents his “Character Ladder” as a tool to help us climb higher. Here, we start exploring its five critical rungs:

Focus on Inner Strength Over Outer Appearance

While outward appearances may initially capture attention, our inner character defines our long-term impact.

Inside influences the outside

Your actions stem from your beliefs and priorities. To grow, reflect on areas for improvement, seek feedback, and commit to learning.

Inner victories precede outer ones.

Align your inner motives with your outward actions. Sustainable progress requires consistency and authenticity.

Inner development is within your control.

Though life’s storms may be unavoidable, you can always choose your response. People’s goals in life aren’t always related to material things; they could be feeling rewarded or relieved after doing meaningful jobs or tasks. It’s true that with money, we can have many more unexpected opportunities and options, but we also need to be wealthy inside.

The sparks of fame and eye-catching lifestyle can reach an end, but how could the shine from within could ever die?”

People Matter

Relationships are essential for growth. Consider how your actions impact others by asking, “What would I want others to do for me?”

  • Empathy and respect build trust. Invest in meaningful connections and show genuine care for those around you.
“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
  • Be a positive influence. Whether through small gestures or significant actions, strive to leave a lasting, positive mark on others.
“The end to all of our relationships either plusses or minuses in the lives of others, but the rule here is to help us remain a plus.”

Teach What You Believe

Passion fuels impact. Speaking or acting without belief creates a disconnect and lackluster results. Authenticity and enthusiasm are essential when sharing ideas or teaching others.

Value Humility Above All Virtues

Humility allows us to see ourselves clearly and embrace growth.

  • See the big picture. Our state now might look like a small dot in the middle of a rough journey, and our existence might also look like a small particle in the middle of billions of people. The key here is not to drag you down; it’s more about knowing your place and not letting ourselves be swayed by other dots.
  • Acknowledge weaknesses. Everyone has flaws, and admitting them opens the door to improvement.
  • Stay teachable. Adopt a beginner’s mindset and remain open to learning.
Never being cocky with what we know today because what we know today might have an expiration date someday.
  • Serve others selflessly. Prioritize listening, understanding, and helping others—it cultivates character and fosters meaningful relationships.
  • Be Grateful, Be Thankful. Gratitude is acknowledging what someone has done to us that we couldn’t do for others.

Strive to Give Your Best Until the End

Consistency in excellence sets a foundation for integrity and trust.

  • Align emotions with actions. Doing what’s right fosters positive feelings, while wrong choices lead to regret.
  • Practice integrity. It’s not about appearances but about doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.

Actionable Steps for Growth

  • Set clear goals. Use the SMART framework (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound) to align with your values.
  • Create a growth plan. Regularly review and adjust it as needed.
  • Engage in daily reflection. Ask, “What did I learn today?” and “How can I improve tomorrow?”
  • Seek feedback. Constructive insights from trusted individuals are invaluable for improvement.
  • Embrace challenges. Use setbacks as opportunities to learn and build resilience.
  • Foster relationships. Surround yourself with supportive, inspiring individuals.

The Bigger Picture

As you climb the ladder, your character becomes your greatest asset. It attracts opportunities, builds trust, and strengthens relationships. Organizations that prioritize character foster cultures of accountability, trust, and excellence, driving extraordinary results.

Growth is a continuous journey. By focusing on character, self-awareness, and integrity, we lay a foundation for meaningful and lasting success. Remember, “Growth is the great separator between those who succeed and those who do not.”
